US ABS 1Q imports, valued at $282 million in 2016, up 6%

HOUSTON, May 16, 2017 (PCW) -- US imports of ABS resin totaled 44,986 metric tons in 1Q, up 2,468 mt, or 6%, from 1Q 2016, the latest USA Trade Online data show.

The top 1Q import source was South Korea at 17,909 mt, up 910 mt, or 5%, from 1Q 2016. 1Q imports from Mexico totaled 9,677 mt, down 1,407 mt, or 13%, from the first three months of 2016.

1Q 2017 ABS imports came from 21 countries. Full year 2016 imports totaled 164,111 mt valued at $282.3 million compared with 13,453 mt valued at $304.1 million in 2015.

Buyers this week were paying $1/lb DDP US ports for imported ABS, down 15-20 cpp from last week, according to a market source.

ABS is used by injection molders to produce products like Lego toys, white water canoes and golf club heads. -- Xavier A. Cronin
