UPDATE 3: Exxon’s Baytown olefins plant has operational issue; no production impact
HOUSTON, June 2, 2016 (PCW) –- ExxonMobil reported its olefins plant at the Baytown facility was experiencing an ‘operational issue’ as of late Wednesday, according to a community hotline message.
“We are experiencing an operational issue at our olefins plant resulting in safety flaring. There is no cause for community alarm, and we apologize for any inconvenience the safety flaring may cause our neighbors,” the message said.
ExxonMobil said in an email statement Thursday: “The event at the ExxonMobil Baytown Olefins Plant is ongoing. There is minimal impact to production, and we expect to meet our contractual commitments.”
A TCEQ filing late Thursday stated the affected unit was the 2.3 billion lb/yr BOP-X, which had been running normally since March 2015.
“A lightning strike tripped the coldbox power source resulting in the safe utilization of the flare system,” the filing stated. -- Samantha Hartke
