Shell makes FID to build Pennsylvania cracker, PE units
HOUSTON, June 7, 2016 (PCW) –- Shell on Tuesday said it had made a final investment decision to build an ethane cracker and polyethylene derivatives units in Pennsylvania.
Construction will begin in the next 18 months and commercial production is expected early in the next decade, the company said.
The cracker will be the first to be built outside the US Gulf Coast in about 20 years.
The facility will have a polyethylene capacity of 1.6 million mt/yr (3.5 billion lb/yr) and will be located along the banks of the Ohio River in Potter Township, Beaver County.
Shell said the location is ideal because some 70% of North American PE customers are within a 700-mile radius of Pittsburgh. -- Samantha Hartke
