US PE scrap exports up on surge to China, India, Vietnam
HOUSTON, June 16, 2017 (PCW) -- US exports of PE scrap totaled 257,681 metric tons in Jan-Apr valued at $101 million, up 36,461 mt or 16% from Jan-Apr 2016, the latest USA Trade Online data show.
Exports to China, the top destination in volume, totaled 125,692 mt in Jan-Apr 2017, up 28,289 mt, or 29%, from the 2016 period. Exports to Hong Kong, the number three destination, totaled 54,515 mt in the first four months of 2017, up 8,269 mt or 17% from Jan-Apr 2016. China and Hong Kong combined accounted for 70% of these exports in Jan-Apr 2017.
Exports were also higher to India, the number two destination, at 31,047 mt, up 8,284 mt, or 36%, from Jan-Apr 2016. Exports to Vietnam were 8,472 mt in the 2017 months, up 3,150 mt, or 59%, from the 2016 period. Exports to Nigeria were 70 mt, compared with none, and to Romania they were 11 mt, also compared to none, for the respective 2017 and 2016 periods.
Exports to Canada dropped 56%, totaling 10,369 mt in Jan-Apr 2017 compared to 23,695 mt in the 2016 period.
Full-year 2016 PE scrap exports totaled 714,061 mt valued at $285 million. -- Xavier A. Cronin
