US PET scrap imports surge from Nigeria, Peru, Honduras

HOUSTON, June 23, 2017 (PCW) -- US imports of PET scrap totaled 36,623 metric tons valued at $21.5 million in Jan-Apr 2017, up 6% from Jan-Apr 2016, the latest USA Trade Online data show.

Imports in Jan-Apr 2017 were up sharply from several countries, including Nigeria at 1,749 mt, up 158%, Peru at 2,743 mt , up 125%, and Honduras, at 4,408 mt, up 64%.

Imports from the top source, Mexico, totaled 9,371 mt, up 9%, and were 7,981 mt to the number two source, Canada, up 25% from the 2016 period. Mexico and Canada combined accounted for 47% of these imports in the first four months of 2017.

Imports from Italy were 15 mt in Jan-Apr, up from none in the 2016 period.

Full-year 2016 PET scrap imports totaled 117,208 mt valued at $63.5 mt. -- Xavier A. Cronin
