US PET imports up 35% in May; none from China, India, Oman

HOUSTON, July 11, 2016 (PCW) -- US imports of packaging grade PET in May totaled 65,771 metric tons, up by 16,933 mt or 35% from May 2015, the latest USA Trade Online data show.

Imports from several countries surged while they fell to zero in three countries that were major suppliers in 2015: China, India and Oman. (please see table).

Anti-dumping duties were imposed on these countries and Canada last year by the US government. Imports from Canada in May were 5,001 mt, down 53% from the year earlier period.

Packaging grade PET imports in January-May totaled 285,510 mt, up 8% from the year earlier period.

Packaging grade PET imports in 2015 totaled 593,318 mt valued at $695.5 million, compared to 587,006 mt valued at $824.2 million in 2014. -- Xavier A. Cronin
