Formosa Plastics VCM reactor at Pt Comfort to Restart Thursday

HOUSTON, July 12, 2016 (PCW) -- Formosa Plastics Corp. shut down a VCM reactor at its 1,440 million mt/yr vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) plant in Point Comfort, Texas on Friday, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

A problem with a valve allowed a small amount of hydrochloric acid (HCl), ethylene dichloride (EDC) and some VCM to escape during normal operations on Friday morning, the company said.

The reactor was taken down for repairs as soon as the discharges were discovered, according to the filing.

Sources at Formosa reported today that it was a very minor repair to just one reactor, and that the reactor is expected to be brought back online on Thursday. -- Donna Todd
