Propylene pipeline leak at Exxon Baytown plant prompts shelter in place order

HOUSTON, July 17, 2016 (PCW) -– A propylene pipeline leak at Exxon Mobil’s Baytown chemical plant resulted in a shelter in place order for an area of the city on Sunday morning.

The order was lifted about two hours around 2.30 pm Central.

Officials for the Baytown Fire Department said the pipeline leak involved propylene.

ExxonMobil in a statement Sunday said it "has shut down two chemical product pipelines in Baytown this morning to investigate a release. We are working with local emergency responders and closely with local officials to ensure the safety of the public. We are continuing to investigate the source of the release."

The Baytown chemical plant has been in operation since 1940. It produces polypropylene and butyl, among others. -- Samantha Hartke
