Westlake restarting Calvert City ethylene unit
HOUSTON, July 18, 2016 (PCW) –- Westlake Chemical on Monday said it was restarting its 0.45 billion lb/yr ethylene unit in Calvert City, Kentucky.
The unit shut down on June 1 due to a mechanical failure, which resulted in a complete outage of its complex. All production was shuttered including that of EDC, VCM, chlor-alkali and PVC resin. The plant also has a PVC production capacity of 1.3 billion lbs/yr.
In late June, Westlake declared force majeure on all products coming out of Calvert City.
On Monday, Westlake said: “The company is working with its customers and suppliers to mitigate the impact of the outage and to meet their needs as production resumes.”
Westlake added the $40 million impact of the outage would affect both the second and third quarter financial results, with nearly half of this amount impacting the third quarter. -– Samantha Hartke
