Ineos Styrolution’s Bayport styrene, ethylbenzene units have ‘upset’
HOUSTON, July 21, 2016 (PCW) -– Ineos Styrolution reported Thursday that its styrene and ethylbenzene units had process upsets, according to community hotline messages.
“The Bayport Plant located at 12222 Port Road in Pasadena Texas had a Styrene unit upset. Over the next few hours there could be some intermittent use of the plant’s safety flare as the plant is being stabilized and started back up. The flare is designed to effectively burn emissions so that offsite impact is not expected. There is also the chance that some high-pressure steam may be released during certain phases of the shutdown/start-up process, which could result in a loud noise and a white plume,” one message said.
The styrene unit has a capacity of 700,000 mt/yr (1.54 billion lb/yr), it reported a similar upset in April. The ethylbenzene unit has a capacity of 870,000 mt/yr (1.9 billion lb/yr). -- Samantha Hartke
