US PS scrap exports up 31% in Jan-May on surge to China
HOUSTON, July 22, 2016 (PCW) -- US exports of polystyrene scrap totaled 13,986 metric tons in the first five months of the year, up by 3,332 mt, or 31%, from January-May 2015, the latest USA Trade Online data show.
In 2015 US PS scrap exports totaled 23,924 mt valued at $19.1 million.
Exports were up to the three major destinations of this scrap -- China, Hong Kong and Canada. Exports to China at 4,499 mt were up by 2,297 mt, or 104%, from the year-earlier period. Exports to Hong Kong totaled 4,333 mt, up 34%, and to Canada they were 3,220 mt, up 7%. The three countries together accounted for 86% of all PS scrap exports in January-May of this year.
PS is one of five plastic scrap export categories tracked by USA Trade Online, part of the US Commerce Department's Census Bureau. -- Xavier A. Cronin
