UPDATE: SABIC, ExxonMobil mulling JV petchems complex on US Gulf Coast
HOUSTON, July 25, 2016 (PCW) –- SABIC and ExxonMobil on Monday said they were mulling a joint-venture petrochemical complex in either Texas or Louisiana.
The complex would include a 1.8 million mt/yr (3.96 billion lb/yr) world-scale steam cracker, which would feed a monoethylene glycol plant and two polyethylene units.
The companies have narrowed the location of the potential complex to St. James Parish, the Parish of Ascension, both in Louisiana; Victoria and San Patricio County, both in Texas.
The companies said they would “conduct necessary studies and work with state and local officials to help identify a potential site with adequate infrastructure access” before making a final investment decision.
No time frame for the FID was provided.
ExxonMobil is already building a new cracker in Texas. The 3.3 billion lb/yr plant is scheduled to come online in the first quarter of 2017. SABIC has, for many years, discussed the possibility of building an ethylene plant but, until now has not made any official announcements. -- Samantha Hartke
