Westlake Chemical successfully restarts Calvert City ethylene unit
HOUSTON, July 28, 2016 (PCW) –- Westlake Chemical on Thursday said it had successfully restarted its 450 million lbs/yr Calvert City ethylene unit in Kentucky.
The unit shut down on June 1 due to a mechanical failure, which resulted in a complete outage of its complex. All production was shuttered including that of EDC, VCM, chlor-alkali and PVC resin. The plant also has a PVC production capacity of 1.3 billion lbs/yr. In late June, Westlake declared force majeure on all products coming out of Calvert City.
Westlake said the Calvert City outage, as well as the planned turnaround at Lake Charles Petro 1 ethylene unit, impacted its 2Q net income by about $65.7 million.
Petro 1 is still in the restart process, the company said. -- Samantha Hartke
