US exports of unsorted plastic scrap surge to Vietnam, Hong Kong

HOUSTON, July 27, 2016 (PCW) -- US exports of unsorted plastic scrap, valued at $328 million in 2015, fell overall in the first five months of 2016 but surged to Vietnam and Hong Kong, the latest USA Trade Online data show.

These exports totaled 303,071 metric tons in the first five months of 2016, down by 13% from January-May 2015. This was in large part due to less going to China--69,559 mt in the 2016 period, down 53%.

But exports to Hong Kong totaled 134,644 mt, up 27%, and to Vietnam were 12,936 mt, up 176%.

This category of plastic scrap exports is one of five tracked by USA Online, a unit of the US Commerce Department's Census Bureau. The others are PE, PS, PVC and PET. It represents the largest category in terms of volume. -- Xavier A. Cronin
