US PET imports up 8.5% in 1H 2016; Brazil volumes surge

HOUSTON, August 5, 2016 (PCW) -- US imports of packaging grade PET in 1H 2016 totaled 343,087 mt, up by 26,942 mt or 8.5% from Jan-Jun 2015, the latest USA Trade Online data show.

Imports from Brazil surged to 40,954 mt in 1H 2016, up nearly ten-fold from 4,265 mt in 1H 2015.

Imports from Mexico were 120,554 mt in 1H 2016, up 21% from the year-ago period. Mexico is the leading exporter of PET to the US.

Imports from China, India and Oman plunged in 1H 2016. These countries and Canada were hit last year with US anti-dumping duties. Despite the duties, imports from Canada in the first six months of 2016 were 47,640 mt, down 35% from 1H 2015. Imports from Oman were 608 mt in 1H 2016, down from 30,878 mt.

Imports from China totaled just 26 mt in 1H 2016, down from 27,995 mt in the 1H 2015 period. India's cargoes totaled 257 mt in 1H 2016, down from 20,117 mt. -- Xavier A Cronin
