BASF/Total cracker in Port Arthur shut due to equipment failure

HOUSTON, August 8, 2016 (PCW) -– BASF and Total’s joint venture cracker in Port Arthur shut on Aug 5 due to an equipment failure.

The entire plant, including the 2.128 billion lbs/yr cracker and C4 units, are offline. An investigation into the cause of the shutdown is ongoing. No restart time frame was provided.

The cracker represents 3.37% of US ethylene production capacity. The outage is expected to result in a demand loss of 20,000 b/d of ethane, 20,000 b/d of propane, 10,000 b/d of butane and 20,000 b/d of natural gasoline, by PCW estimates. -- Samantha Hartke
