US PET scrap exports down 35% in 1H 2016

HOUSTON, August 9, 2016 (PCW) -- US exports of PET scrap in the first six months of 2016 totaled 106,992 metric tons, down 57,001 mt or 35% from 1H 2015, the latest USA Trade Online data show. The major reason for this was a 43% drop in PET scrap exports to China in 1H 2016 from the year-ago period at 50,380 mt.

Exports to Hong Kong totaled 42,554 mt in 1H 2016, down 3,834 mt or 8% from 1H 2015. China and Hong Kong combined accounted for 87% of all US PET scrap exports in 1H 2016.

In all of 2015 PET scrap exports totaled 274,964 mt valued at $103.1 million, down from 368,785 mt valued at $138.2 million in 2014. These exports include PET scrap bales from curbside collection and redemption centers, post-industrial preforms, strapping green, yarn-on-tube lump-and-chunk and other PET scrap. -- Xavier A Cronin
