Shell building ethane pipeline to support Pa. cracker

HOUSTON, August 16, 2016 (PCW) –- Shell Pipeline Company plans to build a 94-mile ethane pipeline to support its planned Pennsylvania cracker.

The pipeline’s initial capacity is expected to be around 100,000 b/d and construction is scheduled to begin in late 2018.

The pipeline will begin in southwestern Pennsylvania and extend into West Virginia and Ohio.

In June, Shell said it had made a final investment decision to build a 3.5 billion lbs/yr ethane cracker and polyethylene derivatives units in Pennsylvania. Construction will begin in the next 18 months and commercial production is expected early in the next decade, the company said.

The cracker will be the first to be built outside the US Gulf Coast in about 20 years. It has an estimated ethane demand consumption capacity of between 80,000-90,000 b/d of ethane.
