ExxonMobil’s Baytown olefins plant has operational issue, returning to normal ops

HOUSTON, August 23, 2016 (PCW) – ExxonMobil said Tuesday it had experienced an unspecified operational issue at its Baytown olefins plant.

“We are returning to normal operations and expect to meet our contractual commitments,” ExxonMobil said.

ExxonMobil has two olefins units at Baytown: the 2.55 billion lbs/yr BOP unit and the 2.3 billion lbs/yr BOP-X. BOP has been running continuously since October 2014 and consumes about 60,000 b/d of ethane. BOP-X has been running continuously since March 2015 and consumes about 65,000 b/d of ethane. The two units make up 7.69% of total US ethylene production capacity.
