Chevron Phillips quickly restarts Cedar Bayou olefins after Tuesday upset

HOUSTON, August 24, 2016 (PCW) -- Chevron Phillips was able to quickly restart operations Tuesday after a power outage at its Cedar Bayou site caused a process upset at the olefins unit. The company was working Wednesday morning to produce on-spec ethylene from the plant.

Overall steam cracker operating rates in the Gulf were around 90%, as ExxonMobil increased its rates at Baytown following a brief operational issue on Tuesday and Westlake worked to bring operating rates back to normal at its Petro 2 unit at Lake Charles. Equistar's Corpus Christi cracker remained in its scheduled turnaround and ExxonMobil's Beaumont plant remained shut.

Aug and Sep ethylene traded up to 38.25 cpp Wednesday morning in the MtB-Williams system, while Sep ethylene for delivery in Texas outside of the MtB-Wms hub was bid up to 40.5 cpp.
