US PE scrap exports surge to Vietnam, Malaysia, India
HOUSTON, August 9, 2017 (PCW) -- US exports of PE scrap were up sharply in 1H 2017 to Vietnam, Malaysia, and India while falling slightly to the top destination, China, the latest US Commerce Department data show.
PE is the largest plastic scrap export sector by volume of the five categories tracked by the US government; the others are PET, PS, PVC and unsorted 'other'.
In 1H 2017, PE scrap exports totaled 366,479 metric tons valued at $142.8 million, up by 20,232 mt or 6% from 1H 2016. Exports to China totaled 162,885 mt, down 1.4% from 1H 2016. Exports to Hong Kong, the number two destination, totaled 72,085 mt in 1H 2017, down 6.7% from 1H 2016.
Exports to India at number three totaled 51,083 mt in 1H 2017, up 76.6%. Vietnam was the fourth top destination at 17,584 mt, up 88% from 1H 2016, with Malaysia fifth at 17,337 mt in 1H 2017, up 82.6%.
Full year 2016 PE scrap exports totaled 714,061 mt valued at $285 million. -- Xavier A. Cronin
