Tanker fire shuts down Houston Ship Channel
HOUSTON, September 6, 2016 (PCW) -- A fire early Tuesday morning has shut down about a mile of the Houston Ship Channel to all traffic.
The Aframax River tanker was located at the Intercontinental Terminals Company in the Deer Park area when it reportedly hit a submerged sewer line, which ruptured the hull and resulted in the fire, according to the US Coast Guard. The fire took place around 2 am.
The vessel was not carrying any liquids on board at the time of the incident and so leaked its own fuel supply, according to the Coast Guard.
The area currently shut down is between the Cargill facility and the Cemex docks.
Maritime data shows the vessel left St Lucia over the past weekend and was due in Mexico after leaving Houston.
The Coast Guard is still investigating the incident and hopes to reopen the Ship Channel around midday.
