LyondellBasell to move ahead with La Porte PE expansion

HOUSTON, September 9, 2016 (PCW) -- LyondellBasell (LBI) said it will begin construction early next year on a 1.1 billion lbs/yr (500,000 mt/yr) HDPE plant in La Porte, TX.

The expected cost of the unit will be $700 million, according to the company.

The unit will be the first commercial plant to utilize LBI's new Hyperzone HDPE technology, and startup is scheduled for 2019.

The new technology will produce HDPE resins with improved stress crack resistance and improved balance between stiffness and impact strength, the company said.

Globally, LBI currently produces 7.8 billion lbs/yr (3.5 million mt/yr) of HDPE, including joint venture plants.

The La Porte HDPE expansion follows several Gulf Coast ethylene expansion projects by LBI, including La Porte (850 million lbs/yr), Channelview (250 million lbs/yr), and Corpus Christi (850 million lbs/yr). The first two ethylene expansions are already operational, and the Corpus Christi expansion is expected online in 4Q. -- David Barry
