US PVC scrap exports plunge as China, Hong Kong take less
HOUSTON, September 7, 2017 (PCW) -– US exports of PVC scrap to China and Hong Kong this year through Jul are down 32% from Jan-Jul 2016, the latest US Commerce Department data show. China’s ban on imports of scrap, set to be effective this month, was seen as the main reason for the drop as exporters eye alternative markets.
China and Hong Kong accounted for 71% of US PVC scrap exports in Jan-Jul 2017. Exports to China were 48,671 mt in Jan-Jul 2017, down 24,407 mt or 33.4%, and exports to Hong Kong totaled 28,254 mt, down 12,820 mt or 31% from the 2016 period.
All PVC scrap exports in Jan-Jul totaled 108,584 mt, down 35,356 mt or 24.6% from Jan-Jul 2016. The exports were valued at $32.8 million in Jan-Jul 2017, down from $46.2 million in Jan-Jul 2016. -- Xavier A. Cronin
